Michael Flynn was considered very loyal to the President, and now his lawyers withdrew stunning move
Michael Flynn lawyers, the former national security adviser to US President Donald Trump, informed the president’s defense team that I can not discuss the investigation of special prosecutor who investigated the potential involvement of people close to Trump in Russian sabotaging the campaign of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton discoverd by the New York Times from four persons involved in this case.
This news is significant because it points out that Flynn probably cooperates with the team of special prosecutor Robert Mueller, who is at the helm of the investigation. Namely, previously Michael Flynn lawyers shared information with Trump’s law firm, reminds NYT.
Defense attorneys often share information throughout the investigation, and they cease when such a practice constitutes a conflict of interest. If one client cooperates with the prosecutors, and the other is still under investigation, it is considered unethical that their teams cooperate. Of course, this notification does not in itself mean that Flynn began to cooperate with Mueller – some lawyers stop sharing information as soon as they start negotiating with the prosecutors, which in some cases does not result in a two-party agreement.
But because of this notice Trumps lawyers believe that Flynn at least started to negotiate about cooperation with Mueller. Neither Trumps nor Flynn’s lawyers wanted to comment on the New York Times’ writings, while four sources for this prominent list spoke on condition of anonymity as they did not have the authority to publicly discuss this matter.
If Flynn began cooperating with a special prosecutor, Mueller would have been given first hand information about Trump’s presidential campaign and the turbulent first weeks of his administration since Flynn was an important part of it, the architect of Trump’s America First platform.
Michael Flynn relations with Russia
In addition, Flynn was also a proponent of closer relations with Russia. His ties with that country were strong before the campaign (in 2015 he was sitting near Vladimir Putin at an event in Moscow, recalls NYT) and was a person in charge of Russia’s issues in the transition team of the new administration.
Among other things, Mueller investigates the circumstances and content of the private meeting that Flynn and Trump’s son in law, Jared Kushner, who is still an important part of Trump’s immediate circle, held by the Russian ambassador during the transition period between the Obama administration and Trump. During this year it was discovered that people from Trump’s campaign repeatedly tried to meet with Russian officials who promised them compromising information about Hillary Clinton.
So far, Flynn has been always described as a loyal Trump employee, but in recent weeks his friends allegedly said he was seriously concerned that prosecutors would file an indictment against his son, Michael Flynn Jr., who served as the head of his father’s office and was sent to several financial transactions involving Flynn’s senior, which the Special Prosecutor also investigates.
From the White House they said that neither Michael Flynn nor his former assistants had incriminating information about the Trump.
The president personally likes General Flynn, but realizes that he has his own way in investigation of a Special Prosecutor. I think it would be sad for both of them to finish the process in indictments and punishments. But in what extent this will come about, this is beyond our control – White House lawyer Ty Cobb said in an interview for the New York Times last month.
